Go to the shopWe believe in rejuvenation as a crucial antidote to throwaway consumer culture. Well-designed, well-constructed pieces of furniture should last a lifetime, and beyond. That’s why we developed our buyback scheme – we want to revive and recycle all PearTree items as and when you need us to.
This circular system provides an easy alternative to the traditional linear production line which simply accelerates waste production. Not only is our furniture used and loved time and time again, but in this way we can conserve natural resources by reusing existing materials and also reduce the burden on global supply chains of shipping parts to where they are manufactured.
Longevity is our fundamental objective; through our strict processes of assessment and restoration, we hope that the correct choice of high quality materials and exemplary craftsmanship will allow our furniture will live with you and your families for as long as you need it to. And when you don’t need it any more, we’ll take it back.
We work on furniture of all shapes and sizes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, using cabinet making skills to repair detailing and ensure that all mechanisms work perfectly. We use specialist techniques to finish every item to the highest quality, including a range of skilled applications such as French Polishing, resulting in timeless, handcrafted furniture which is both hard wearing and lovely to look at. This requires a high degree of skill, technical knowledge and sensitivity, skills which have sadly been on the decline in recent years.
We are hopeful that a renewed awareness of the importance of a sustainable lifestyle will lead to an increased interest in the art and craft of furniture restoration. We have a long-term ambition to encourage people into this profession and therefore to preserve the skills and passion which are now more crucial than ever as we strive to live more consciously.
The effects of climate change are well-documented in the news with increasing frequency of large-scale events. We therefore operate with and maintain the highest standards of environmental and social governance. Not only do we want to provide a truly viable conscious alternative to ‘fast’ furniture, but we also want to do it with as little impact as possible.
The substances we use in our restoration – waxes, polishes, varnishes – are sourced in Britain and derived from natural, sustainable sources wherever possible. We scrutinise our (mostly very short) supply chains to ensure that the highest standards of environmental and social welfare are employed.
Our key purpose of restoration and a circular economy has important environmental and sustainability connotations. We believe there is no reason why well-made furniture cannot follow a circular economy. We want to considerably reduce the existence of furniture which is environmentally dangerous and ethically questionable, not to mention of short lifespan, which currently dominates our high streets.
Unique and timeless furniture reconditioned to last a lifetime, and beyond. Helping to keep our homes beautiful and good things out of landfill.
PearTree was founded with a simple ambition: to make the sourcing of truly sustainable, restored furniture easy. It’s all too simple to buy a newly-made piece of furniture, but how often do we consider the impact of its production, or its likely longevity? We should all be able to make sustainable choices about how we furnish our homes, for both style and comfort, without compromising on integrity.
Furniture for living, for life.
People have been making furniture for over 30,000 years; in many ways furniture is the bedrock of human civilisation. Although not every piece of furniture ever made will last 30,000 years, with the right love and attention, many can last several hundred. More than 300,000 tonnes of reusable items of furniture are binned in the UK alone every year; accounting for 60% of total landfill volume. Furthermore, newly manufactured furniture has an often unconsidered impact on the environment. The average piece of furniture generates c. 47kg of greenhouse gas, roughly equivalent to burning 5.3 gallons of petrol - that’s London to Sheffield in the average combustion engine.
At PearTree we believe in rejuvenation as a crucial antidote to throwaway consumer culture. Well-designed, well-constructed pieces of furniture should last a lifetime, and beyond.
PearTree began in 2021 when Charlie and Flora Scott left London for Northamptonshire with their two small boys and a burning desire to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, and to work together.
PearTree restoration work is advised by Anthony Beech, ACR, who provides guidance on techniques and materials appropriate to the heritage of each piece. Anthony has over twenty five years’ experience in furniture conservation, and is accredited by both the British Antique Furniture Restorers Association (BAFRA) and the Institute for Conservation (ICON).
